News and a story of how my dogs surprise me
So, corgi lovers! News from Kirby and Baxter’s household! They will soon have a tiny human to protect and deal with (and be totally confused by) around here. :)
We are very excited, but I have to say one thing has been weighing on my mind since we found out. How will the dogs behave once there’s an infant (and worse, someday a toddler, that pulls fur and ears!) in the house??
Kirby in particular is a known lover of children, and has played joyfully with my niece since she was two (she’s now 6). He’s surprisingly gentle. Baxter, on the other hand, has always been terrified of her, and despite her intense desire to pet him, will NOT be caught. But neither of them have ever been around a BABY.
So yesterday my sister-in-law came by with my new niece, who is now 4 months old. She is now at the smiling, laughing, everything goes in the mouth, pulling your hair and earrings stage. I put the dogs up, thinking it would be less chaotic. My sister-in-law, who loves Kirby, promptly let them both out. I watched them both like a hawk as they approached the carrier, sitting on the floor, with the sleeping baby inside.
Kirby stuck his whole head in the carrier and sniffed Annie. And then licked her face, giving her a very confused wake up call. Soon after, she started smiling. I breathed a sigh of relief at how gentle he was. He stayed nearby with interest as Baxter ran right up to the carrier and started sniffing, making Annie giggle. Kirby eventually had to be put up because of his loud, excited bark (that’s a problem for another day), but Baxter stayed out and curiously sniffed and licked and pranced about as we played with the baby on the floor. He was so sweet and happy, and Annie loved him. I watched her pull his fur several times and he just wagged his tail and let it happen. I guess what I’m trying to say here is that I’m pretty happy and proud that my sweet little monsters are baby-friendly. :)
